Understanding property taxes before you move

Why the last owner’s tax bill may not tell your whole story.

Start with the parcel

Property taxes are property-specific. Millages, taxable value, exemptions and assessment timing matter more than neighborhood averages.

Michigan reassessment matters

A transfer of ownership can affect the taxable value used in subsequent tax calculations. Do not use a seller’s current bill as a firm promise of what you would pay.

Get a property-specific estimate

Review Oakland County and the city assessor information, and ask your lender or title professional to help you estimate a realistic monthly escrow. Check Principal Residence Exemption rules if applicable.

This is general education, not tax, legal, financial or school-enrollment advice. Confirm property-specific details through official sources.
